The Alhambra (The Red Fortress)

The literal translation of Alhambra, "red fortress," reflects the color of the red clay of the surroundings of which the fort is made. The buildings of the Alhambra were originally whitewashed; however, the buildings seen today are reddish. The Alhambra's Moorish palaces were built for the last Muslim Emirs in Spain and its court, of the Nasrid dynasty. After the Reconquista (reconquest) by the Reyes Católicos ("Catholic Monarchs") in 1492, some portions were used by the Christian rulers. This 14th century masterpiece was one of the 21 landmarks shortlisted for the New 7 Wonders. Such an accomplishment when you factor in the great number of majestic sights all over the world. And indeed, the Alhambra lives up to its high-set expectations.

One just can't miss the marvelous courtyards, fascinating honeycomb arches and of course the famous Fountain of Stone Lions. Caveat, though. None of numerous ponds and water treatments in the complex can be used as a wishing well.

El Albaicin

El Albaicín is the old Moorish quarter of the city. It's located on a hill facing the Alhambra and there are dramatic views of this area from the palace's famous rose gardens.Reminiscent of the old medieval Moorish past, Albaicín is a delight for its narrow, maze-like streets. You will feel like a character in a detective novel, navigating tight passages showcasing a series of impressive Moorish houses. A trip to Albaicin won't be complete without passing through Caldereria Street where you can satisfy your penchant for trinkets and local handmade wares. There's also a Turkish bath around the corner where you can revitalize your tired and sore muscles.
